Day 9: God will direct us
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
If like me you grew up in Sunday School then these verses probably role of your tongue without paying much attention. Despite probably knowing these verses, let’s choose to look at them afresh today, as no matter how many times we’ve read something God can always bring something new from it. So let’s unpack each part.
‘Trust in the Lord with all your heart’
The dictionary defines trust as: reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety etc of a person or thing. For example, I absolutely trust my earthly father which means I have total and complete confidence in his integrity, ability and good character because I know him and have a relationship with him. I trust him because I know him. However is that the same level of trust I am placing in my Heavenly Father?
If we’re honest sometimes we can find it harder to trust God than we do man which is crazy really because man ultimately will let us down. Only God is perfectly trust worthy and faithful. The key to trusting God more is knowing him more, as we get to know him so we can come to trust him!
‘Lean not on your own understanding’
We are merely human and God is the creator of the universe! Our ways are not God’s ways and our thoughts are not God’s thoughts. We’re not always going to understand his ways but like any loving father God wants what is best for us so lets choose to lean on him and trust his words & his ways.
‘In all your ways submit to Him’
Not just some ways on some days but in all our ways and on every day. The New Living Translation of this verse reads:
‘Seek His will in all you do’
The words seek and submit to me speak of intention, it’s something we intentionally choose to do, turning every area of our lives over to him. This proverb was written by Solomon but about a thousand years later Jesus emphasises this same truth in Matthew 6:33 which Ps Dan covered brilliantly on day 6. Let’s be people who seek first his will and submit our ways to him as when we do…..
‘He will make your paths straight’
There is nothing better than being on the path God has for you and in this hard season we’re walking through it can feel like we’ve been knocked off course and we’re not sure the way forward. I love this promise that if if we seek him first, trust in his ways and not our understanding then he will make the path clear, make it straight and help us back on course. We may not know where the path leads but we can trust God to not only get us through but to experience his joy, love, plans and purposes along the way!
God thank you that you love me and have a good plan for my life. Help me to get to know you more so I can trust you more. Show me any areas of my life where I am not seeking you first, I want all areas of my life to submit to you. God show me the path you have for me today and help me walk each step with you. Amen.
