Day 15
Friday, January 28th
I often read my Bible and think “Wow! I wouldn’t dare speak to God that way!”
The Psalmists are often abrupt, presumptuous and (to our Western ears) verging on downright rude!!
No reluctance to ask for ‘more’ there.
I’ve recently come to the conclusion that I am at fault, not them – for too often trying to make things happen myself; for not trusting Him enough or taking him at his word enough; for my lack of Faith. This was particularly highlighted early last year when we were house hunting. Moving to Workington in answer to the clear call of God on our lives it quickly became obvious that the task was impossible. Not only did we not have enough finance, the type of house we were looking for didn’t seem to exist! As the date for moving out of our old house drew closer, we made offers on houses and were outbid by thousands. I told God I would live in a shoebox if I had to.
His reply was clear –
Be specific
Tell me what you want
Be more demanding!!
So I asked for a greater measure of his Holy Spirit. I prayed for more wisdom and I made a ticklist of all the things we needed in a house to be able to serve the new church and our community (still in my comfort zone – I could justify asking for those things!) But he sent me back to write down what I would like! I really struggled with that kind of ‘more’. That was God’s wisdom, not mine.
Ephesians 3:20
“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us…”
His ‘immeasurably more’ is conditional. It’s according to his power at work in us. Ask for more Holy Spirit and more will overflow into every area of our lives.
More is a kingdom principle. More is where we start sharing without fear of going without. More overflows into our communities, into people’s lives. More is where his kingdom is expanded and where we make an impact.
Prayer
We are invited by God today to ask for more of his Holy Spirit and to take him at his word –
Be specific
Tell him what you want
Be more demanding!!
Footnote: God gave us the perfect house. He released extra finance to us and he placed us at the right time, in the right place to have our offer accepted. Its a house that serves us as we serve Workington. Its also a place for Family, Friends and Fun. Its unique and wonderful. More continues to flow out of that decision to allow his Holy Spirit in. Every single thing on our list was answered with more!
