Day 19: Joshua Chapters 13-22
The Allotment of Land
Over the last couple of weeks there have been some incredible stories, accounts and history of the Israelites conquering and stepping into the promised land.
Now that they’ve conquered the land, what now…
Today we are going to be be covering 9 chapters and around 10,000 square miles.
The allotment, allocation and division of the promised land to the different tribes.
Please feel free to go and read all 9 chapters right now.
Or listen to them on double speed.
After seven years of battle, Israel gained control of the land, which was then divided and allotted to the tribes. Joshua dismisses the army for it was now each tribe’s responsibility to clear out the remaining enemies for their own areas.
This is what I’ve noticed from the 9 chapters…
God is into the details. He loves it.
He didn’t just create the world, like a 3 year old attacking play dough. No, there is order and form, the sun that governs the day, the moon at night, which affects the sea and tides. God is into the details.
The allotment of land, is pure details. How far they stretched, where the borders stopped, who would live and get each section. Beautifully pure details.
If God is into the details, then for us ‘moving forward’ into a new season, life, job, faith and future. Let’s get detailed.
When it comes to your prayer life, let’s not play it safe. “Please Lord, bless everyone, bring peace to the world. Amen” although a decent prayer, it’s quite vague. Be specific. In what areas of your life do you need God to move? What outcomes are you asking God for?
God loves the details, so be detailed in your prayers.
Throughout the chapters, occasionally this short phrase appears: “They did not dislodge” the people of the land. (15:63, 16:10, 17:12) This was against God’s desire and command for them as they started to settle into their own new lands.
Whether it was fear, capacity, size of their army or uncertainty. Their failure to remove completely the people and their gods from the land would cause many problems for the nation. The book of Judges records many of these struggles.
‘Moving Forward’ what needs to be dislodged in your life?
What needs up rooting and banishing from your life?
Israel’s failure to remove the people brought about pain, struggle, compromise, and for some a complete u-turn from God.
Ask God now to show you what needs dislodging and then immediately act on it.
Prayer. Forgiveness. Removal. Anything that needs to be done do it.
This could be programmes you watch, websites you visit, certain friendship groups or habits.
Remember, when asking God for help with the dislodging be detailed. What exactly do you need help in, name specific situations, people, habits.
Let’s move forward with a faith that is uncompromising, a trust that is unwavering, and a hope that is fixed on the unchanging love and power of Jesus Christ.
