Day 2: Psalm 1
Welcome to the first Psalm in our Daily Devotions. I hope today and every day these devotions stir your faith and help you go deeper in your walk with God.
I think it is fair to say that most of us would like our lives to be fruitful but 2020 has been such a strange year, maybe it’s not been as fruitful as you would have hoped! Maybe for some of you, if you’re completely honest it has thrown you off course but as Pastor Ben said on our last Sunday before this second lockdown:
‘it’s never too late for a personal revival’
Whatever the year has been like so far it’s not over yet. It’s not too late to press into God, experience personal revival and to even see fruit! God wants to do more in us and through us. The best way we can live fruitful lives is to daily be in the word of God.
Psalm 1:2 says
blessed is the one whose delight is in the law of the Lord and who meditates on his law day and night
The law of the Lord means the whole of scripture and to meditate on the word means to think on it, not just read it but dwell on it and apply it to our lives. In my experience when we do this it brings refreshment, encouragement, it’s faith building and comforting. The word of God brings wisdom, guidance and hope when needed. It’s also a thrilling read, some of the stories are up there with Hollywood Blockbusters!
In all seriousness being rooted in the word of God is the best thing we could ever do. My prayer is that these new daily devotions would stir your faith and give you a new passion for his reading and meditating on God’s word, because when we do we see what verse 3 describes:
that person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither – whatever they do prospers.
Now when it says whatever they do prospers it doesn’t mean immunity to failure or difficulty. Nor is it a guarantee of health, wealth and happiness but when we apply God’s wisdom the fruit we bear will be good. Just as a tree soaks up water and bears good and healthy fruit, we are also to soak up God’s word which produces good and healthy fruit in our lives.
Jeremiah 17:7-8 says
blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.
These words are my prayer for you – that during this lockdown you would trust in God once again. You would let your roots grow deep into Him so that you can continue to choose faith over fear, so that you can have that security of not having to worry even if this feels like it’s been a year of drought.
Let’s choose daily to be in the word of God because God’s not done with 2020 yet and as we root ourselves in His word, only good fruit is to follow!
