Day 4: Romans 3
At the beginning of this chapter Paul wants us to have a true view of what God is like. How often is it the case where some say this and some say that about God? But Paul affirms that God is faithful, He is just, He is righteous and true. Whatever He does is good and fair.
Paul paints such a bleak, hopeless picture of our spiritual state before we receive Jesus as our Saviour. He quotes several verses mainly from Psalms. Every one of us stands condemned before God as wretched sinners being dead to God and without hope. Ephesians Ch.2 backs this up:
As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins…. we were by nature deserving of wrath….. without hope and without God in the world.
If someone is dead they are unable to respond or communicate with their environment. We were dead to God. Hopeless cases. Paul makes it clear that, by our own efforts, by trying to obey the law or trying to be good, no one can become acceptable in God’s eyes. It is as if we were in a deep pit, unable to get out, unless someone came to rescue us. We may not have fully realised our desperate plight before we received Jesus but this was our perilous state.
BUT GOD… How I love those words. One of the great verses of the Bible is:-
But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions – it is by grace you have been saved. Ephesians Ch.2 v4,5.
For the hopeless cases, there is hope. In verses 21-31 God’s response is made clear. God will lift us out of that deep, horrible pit as He himself reaches out to us when we simply believe in what Jesus has done for us by taking our punishment on himself.
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast Ephesians Ch.2 v8,9.
Even the faith required for our salvation is a gift from God! By simply putting our faith and trust in Jesus and what He has done for us we are made right in His sight. Whether we are Jews or Gentiles, no matter how good or bad we think we are, His grace through faith reconciles us to God. We have nothing to boast about except our Saviour. His grace is amazing!
Be encouraged, God is for us! His grace is sufficient for our salvation and for all our needs. What a salvation, what a Saviour!
