The story so far
The previous chapter we have read about the amazing escape of Peter from prison. In verse 24 of chapter 12 it says “But the word of God continued to spread an flourish!” Isn’t that great that no matter what, God’s Word will spread!
Reading: Acts 13
We know by now that the early church faced a lot of opposition.
This chapter there is more opposition, this time in the form of a loud man who’s name means “Son of Jesus” but they called him Elymas. He was against them and what they stood for and tried to create problems through “deceit and trickery” – we don’t know what that looked like, was it spreading rumours or causing mistrust? Was it spiritual? We aren’t told specifics but we do know this person was causing a headache and trying to thwart what God had called them to.
I don’t know if you’ve ever felt called to something? We sometimes have an idea that if God has said it, the working out of that word will be easy.
Sadly and frustratingly thats often not the way! Often following through with God’s call means walking into opposition and what can feel like attack.
It can come in many forms, for us, whenever we have planted a church or announced it, we’ve had a car issue! A big modern day headaches!
Sometimes it’s a financial thing, sometimes a relationship issue or sometimes even an old insecurity rises up! What ever it is they usually have one thing in common, distraction!
Something that focus’ you on the problem over the calling and purpose and is designed to make you panic and question!
But I love how the apostles dealt with it!
They didn’t reason and plead, they didn’t ask for opinions or read 20 books on how to deal with nasty people, they identified it for what it was, dealt with it spiritually then moved on!
The trick is to not entertain distraction!
Deal with it! Move on from it and lift your eyes back on to what you are called and sent to, because there is more at stake than what you sometimes even realise.
At the end of this part of the story the man of influence (the proconsul) saw what happened and through it believed!
The enemy tried to cause distraction and stop God’s purpose – but God used it to still advance his kingdom – that right there is new level living!
Distraction into victory!
