Day 5: Jesus Raises a Dead Girl
Luke 8:40-42 and 49-56
Here’s what we know…
Jarius’ daughter had just died. If you’ve ever lost someone close to you, you know the grief that was spreading through Jarius’ body when he heard that his daughter had died.
Jesus, turns to Jarius and speaks these words: “Do not fear, only believe.”
Jesus, then rushes to Jarius’ house, takes the girl by her hand and says, ‘My child get up.’ Instantly, her spirit returns and she gets up. Healed.
When Jesus speaks in my bible, the words are written in red. To stand out, to be noticed. So let’s today notice what Jesus is saying to Jarius, to us and to the world…
‘Do not fear, only believe!”
Do not be afraid.
It kind of sounds insensitive of Jesus to say this to a man who just lost his daughter, but Jesus knew that fear and faith don’t go together. Before Jairus could really trust Jesus, he had to decide to put away fear.
Jesus was encouraging that at the moment the only thing he needed to do was to believe.
Not to try and balance belief and fear at the same time, or try to believe whilst trying to figure it all out. Instead, just believe.
The only thing that Jairus had to believe in was Jesus’ word, even when everything around him, as well as the thoughts inside him were saying that there was no hope, your daughter is already dead.
We may never have lost a child or truly know what it feel likes to be Jarius. But Jesus words still ring true today.
Do not fear about the statistics we see on tv, only believe that Jesus is control.
Do not fear about the coming weeks of work, finances or food, only believe that Jesus timing is perfect.
In this season, when all we see is fear and uncertainty. Let Jesus’ words be a comfort to us.
‘Do not fear, only believe!’
