Day 4: Faith over Fear – Gideon
We pick up the story of Gideon in Judges 6…
– His land is under attack.
– He and his people are isolated and going without.
– He’s working alone in a winepress, trying to survive and live in trying conditions.
– It’s a time of uncertainty and fear, but in the midst of this God shows up and speaks hope and life into the situation.
God reminds the people in verses 8-10 that He hears them in their time of need, that He had previously brought them out of slavery, rescued them, defeated their enemey and gave them their own land and provision! And He finishes by saying “I am the Lord your God”.
Now God comes to Gideon personally! Right where he is, in the midst of his confusion and isolation and announces “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior”.
Isn’t it comforting to know that just as God came to Gideon, He comes straight into our current situation, into our homes and lives, and speaks life, hope and courage to us. Whether we’re working out how to manage home-schooling children and working, concerns about the health and well-being of our friends and family or concerns about our current finances and what the future holds – be assured, God knows and He is with us!
After some initial questions and doubts from Gideon in verse 13, God then commissions Gideon, “Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending you?”
We have been commissioned, even in this strange time. Where there is fear, anxiety and worry we have the opportunity to speak life, hope and courage as we have received it. That’s why getting involved in things like the Be Kind initiative that we’re doing as Church is so good!
The Lord is with us, all we need to do is to have courage and go in the strength we have. God will do the rest and supply all that we need.
