Day 7: James 3:1-12
So I did smile to myself when given the verses titled ‘Taming the Tongue’, as those of you who know me well, can attest to the fact that my tongue is constantly on the go – I love to talk! I have, however, over the years begun to realise just how important a tool for good, or evil, the tongue can be.
Verses 4&5
Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder to wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.’
The words we speak reflect our hearts and in that they give direction, not only to us, but also to others. What we speak out, and over, ourselves and other people has power in the heavenlys and makes a difference!!
Verse 9
With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness.
This verse truly challenges and humbles me and I am very thankful that we have a God who forgives and knows all our imperfections. None of us are perfect and at times we all say things that are negative and hurtful, but I think the important thing is to recognise these moments, take responsibility for the hurt done to others and then take it to God. The times we fail can always be teaching moments if we allow it!
Verses 11&12
Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water.
Ultimately, we all have a choice – do we want to be people who encourage and build others up with our words or do we choose to use our voices to tear people down?
If we want to honor God we need to keep challenging ourselves by working towards a place where we become more spiritually aware of the power that our words hold.
On a practical note, after studying these verses I am going to ask God to help me discern what should actually go from being in my head to coming out of my mouth!! (It’s a good job He is all powerful!!)
I would really encourage you to do the same… how amazing would it be if the only words we spoke to each other were ones of love and positivity!
